introduction

This module is an exploration of passive sustainable strategies in architectural design. It examines the many components of architecture and how the incorporation of passive design techniques with these components enhances the quality of the spatial experience inside a building. The uses of these tactics and their effects on the quality and experience of space will be examined through series of case studies. The knowledge of the several passive sustainable design approaches will guide us for the individual studio project.

ASSIGNMENT 01

To critically appraise application of chosen strategies within different cases.

To analyze theories and principles of passive green building design strategies.

Project 01

For Project 1, we are asked to select two case studies on the use of passive sustainable design solutions within an architectural project from a tropical climate region and other climatic regions in groups of five people. The passive design tactics used in both case studies are expected to be identified and compared. Additionally, we must examine and expound on how these passive tactics affect the quality and spatial experience of the selected project.

Project 02

For this project, we are required to develop passive and active green building strategies simultaneously with our final architectural studio project. Then, we must use all the passive green building strategies from our Assignment 1 tropical building case study, including but not limited to site planning, day lighting, façade design, natural ventilation, strategic landscaping, and other renewable energies, wherever it is practical.
